Military Women Struggle With Eating Disorders

In the military, troops are required to meet certain height and weight assessments, something that helps identify individuals who might struggle with eating disorders.

But this data isn't always thorough enough to identify problems that are kept secret.

According to a report by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, over 3,500 service members were diagnosed with some kind of eating disorder — typically anorexia or bulimia — over a 10 year period ending in 2013.

At the end of 2015, the U.S. Army put out a major report, entitled "Health of the Force," which talked about soldiers not being physically fit to deploy, but had no mention of eating disorders.

Patricia Murphy, military and veterans reporter for member station KUOW in Seattle, shares the story of a Marine who struggled with bulimia and the steps she took to start dialogue about eating disorders in the military.
